That Black Line On Your Belly:
When you get pregnant, your body goes through a lot of changes, your belly being the most obvious one. But along with it increase in size, a dark line also begins to form. For those women who are having their first baby, the appearance of a dark line on their belly can come as quite a shock. So what is it? and what does it mean?
It official name: Linea Nigra. A Latin word which means ‘dark line’.It most commonly appears from the belly button, running straight down to the waist line. But it can also run vertically from the belly button up to the ribcage and occasionally, up between the breasts. This dark line starts to form during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. It starts off around the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy as a very fine line which slowly expands and becomes darker. As the tummy enlarges the width and intensity of Linea Nigra also expands.
While you’re thinking that pregnancy as well as the stretching and separating of abdominal muscles caused the line to form, but the truth is it has always been there only not that visible
No, it will not harm you or your growing baby. Linea Nigra is restricted to external skin cells and does not cause a discoloration of darkening of the uterus or the baby. It is quite literally “skin deep”.
There is nothing specific you can do to prevent the formation of Linea Nigra or reduce your likelihood of getting it. We cannot change the colour of our skin, or the changes which occur as a result of pregnancy hormones.
Now that I have it, how do I get rid of it
There is no ‘cure’ for linea Nigra. No specific treatment which is recommended or generally warranted. For most women it settles and becomes progressively gradually disappears within the first few months after having their baby.
Do I need to bleach?
Absolutely not.Bleaching creams are not recommended and although some may claim to work miracles, the fact is that most don’t. The compound contained in many bleaching products is known as hydroquinone, a form of chemical which is an inhibitor for melanin production. Products containing hydroquinone have not been assessed as safe to use during pregnancy or lactation. If you really want to try it, you should speak with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Is there anything I can do to make the dark line go away faster?
Some women will tell you to rub coconut oil, sheabutter and the likes on your tummy as a form of prevention or cure(and I don’t know if it works ), but there is no evidence to support this theory. Using creams and lotions on the tummy can help pregnant women believe that by doing “something” they are at least making an effort, no matter how negligible the benefits. And there is no harm in doing this.
Just take it as one of those scars that comes with pregnancy and thankfully this one goes away( unlike some stretch marks)
